How to pick the best air-conditioner?
One of our existing air-conditioners is about to die soon.
So we need a replacement. But which one?

Currently we need a smaller unit for the second floor.

Carrier system
One of AC installer companies recommend "Carrier" system:
=======================================
Cooling Capacity : 22000
Heating Capacity : 21600
SEER : 14.5
EER : 12
HSPF : 8.2

Heat Pump Carrier 25HCE424A003
-10 year parts limited to original purchaser upon timely registration (otherwise 5 years).

Air Handler Carrier FV4CNF002L00
- Variable Speed

Auxiliary Heater Carrier CE0501N05

Thermostat Carrier TP-WEM01
- Wifi Capable.
- 5 year warranty if registered in a timely manner.
=======================================
Price (including installation): $5,699

That choice seems a little bit pricey for a small AC unit. But what do you think?

Update:

http://www.homeadvisor.com/cost/heating-and-cooling/install-an-ac-unit/
Most homeowners report spending between $3,710 and $7,140 to have air conditioning installed. This price is more typical of a central A/C unit installation rather than a window central air conditioner addition which typically averages about $300.

I ordered 18,000 BTU Ductless DC Inverter Mini Split Air Conditioner, Heat Pump, 230VAC. 21 SEER. MODEL: WYQ018GMFI22RL. AHRI CERTIFIED about a year ago from highseer.com for $1300. Had to install it myself (you need some minor equipment) but paid about $150 for electrician for profession connection 240 volts.

1) How much of your time went into that installation?

2) https://www.amazon.com/Inverter-Conditioner-Dehumidification-Ventilation-Installation/dp/B00M7E57W8
How noisy is it?

3) This is not a central air-conditioner unit I am shopping for ...
How big is your house?
I would guess about ~1400 sq. feet?

4) It is interesting, how efficient these "Ductless DC Inverter Mini Split Air Conditioner" is. 21 SEER is a very high efficiency number. Even the most expensive central air conditioners usually do not claim such high efficiency. Typical SEER numbers range from 15 to 19 SEER.

1. Installation took a weekend. I had to buy a set for AC installation (something like http://www.ebay.com/itm/4CFM-Rotary-Vacuum-Pump-1-3HP-AC-Manifold-Gauge-R410-R-22-R134-R407C-Refrigerant-/351561649677?hash=item51dab50e0d:g:HcQAAOSwPWRZWPld)

2. My device is very similar to the link. It is very quiet, less noisy than forced air heating that I have in my house.

3. If you have all the setup them go for the central one. My house is ~2000 sq feet but my summers are very moderate and I use AC only in hot days.

4. Ductless are known to be more economical than central ones - pushing air through central ducts warms quite a lot.

You can try DUI installation of the central one yourself. If you just replace the old unit it should not be very difficult. But you will have to buy a bottle of appropriate refrigerant (usually R410) from ebay, it is additional $200. But some dexterity is definitely needed.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to hire a professional installer?
Your time is probably much more expensive.

> Ductless are known to be more economical than central ones

Thank you for the unexpected perspective.

I would ... if I planned to regularly install Air Conditioners.
But realistically, this is 1 or 2 times deal for me.
So specialization principle hints that I would be better off if I just hire help for that.

BTW, dealing with the refrigerant requires getting a license for work like that.

3,025 sqft.

Кстати, несмотря на то, что ты на севере (относительно меня), но у тебя летняя температура может быть и повыше моей (от океана немного дальше).

Возможно у вас налоги штата на подобную HVAC аппаратуру и labor - неприлично задраны.
