Big brother watching
Why do you mind if Big Brother watching you?

Re: Big brother watching
I don't want my private mail to be "accidentially" or "by highest authority's order" or by whatever reason publicly shared. And Google is well known to store all information that goes through Gmail even info that user purged from the trash folder.

Big brother watching
Why does this small "authority lookup" probability bother you?
Doesn't convenience of gmail worth this small risk?

BTW, big brother can watch email (and more) at your own computer. And probability of this is not less than probability of watching your email at Google's computers.

Re: Big brother watching
I'm absolutely happy with my existing email providers. Gmail does not add ANY useful feature for me while creates additional concerns.

You are completely right in terms of your personal preferences and criterias.

BTW. One of your favorite features. Using Gmail try to change subj when forwarding or replying.

Tell me any reason why gmail.com is better than mail.ru? :)
Dennis Gorelikdennisgorelik on July 8th, 2005 01:54 pm (UTC)
1) Gmail has 2+ Gb mailbox size. So you just don't delete mail from server and can always look for your email history.
2) Gmail has the most powerful search --- you can search for your old emails with any word or phrase which you want to.
3) I think that gmail's spam filters are better than anywhere else.
selfmade on July 8th, 2005 03:56 pm (UTC)
1) For average email user as I am 100-200 Mb of mail server space is more than enough
BTW, I'm using 2 mail servers. One of then has UNLIMITED mailbox and another one had 1 Gb one year ago and probably they extended it.

2) How often do you use smart search within your emails?

3) Prove, please. :)
Dennis Gorelikdennisgorelik on July 8th, 2005 04:11 pm (UTC)
1) Even 10MB is enough is you are not going to store&search your email history on server.
The biggest advantage of Gmail is exactly this store&search feature.
2) I'd say that ~once a week I need to search within my email history. I need this smart search.
At this point I didn't really try Gmail smart search, since my email database at Gmail is small yet.
I'll tell you about my success in Gmail smart search later.
3) I don't have strong prove of quality of Gmail spam-filters.
At this point I didn't get any spam on Gmail account, but that's not the prove yet, since I'm just starting actively use Gmail.
In theory, Google's spam-filtering approach is the best, but again - I didn't have chance to test it in practice.
selfmade on July 8th, 2005 04:18 pm (UTC)
Ha-ha.

You didn't use "smart" features of Gmail YET while Big Brother is watching you ALREADY.

Please, publish your email address somewhere so spammers could access it otherwise you'll never test Gmail spam filter properly.
Dennis Gorelikdennisgorelik on July 8th, 2005 04:24 pm (UTC)
Spam test
Good idea!

What if I create gmail account for spam and you create mail.ru (or whatever) account for spam.
Then we'll publish these two addresses together.

Even better, we can test several accounts:
@hotmail.com
@yahoo.com
@mail.ru
@gmail.com
What else?

I wonder why are you getting excited about gmail so late, while it's already in place for quite some time...

I think you are right saying that gmail is cool, and they were the first ones offering 1 Gb of storage at the time they appeared. Apparently, many of the things Google does happen to be cool - I have started using Google Picasa for handling pictures and doing simple retouching, and they were smart to acquire blogger.com in time...

So Gmail is excellent, but not revolutionary - just one step forward. The same can be said almost about any IT product that appears - the most revolutionary one I have seen in the last few years being LinkedIn... Google Maps are another evolutionary thing (there have already been NASA sattelite maps available, but not exactly online), but probably quite an influential one.
Dennis Gorelikdennisgorelik on July 8th, 2005 11:32 pm (UTC)
1) I'm excited about Gmail only now because I finally started to use it :-)
Actually I was excited before, but it was kind of remote excitement, not very real :-)

2) It's practically impossible to bring completely revolutional idea into production in a reasonable amount of time. Google does the best --- makes ideas feasible and implements them ASAP.

3) How do you use LinkedIn? Is it useful?
Dmitri Soshnikovshwars on July 8th, 2005 11:43 pm (UTC)
I guess only (3) needs answering:
I personally do not use LinkedIn much, but I know people who do. Besides, I like the idea (it is not revolutionary, but implementations are rare), and we actually build up our projects on top of similar principles (FOAF-like).
selfmade on July 9th, 2005 05:18 pm (UTC)

Dennis Gorelikdennisgorelik on July 9th, 2005 08:03 pm (UTC)

selfmade on July 22nd, 2005 09:10 pm (UTC)
Сервер принимающей стороны и есть Гугл.

Я только что провёл эксперимент. Google не принимает файлы с аттачментом RAR.

Ok, Gmail doesn't allow rar-archives. But it allows zip-archives. (I just tested both cases)
So I still can work with Gmail without problem.

Why the anxiety?
selfmade on July 22nd, 2005 09:36 pm (UTC)
No anxiety. I'm happy without gmail. Just giving you something to think about.
Dennis Gorelikdennisgorelik on July 22nd, 2005 09:42 pm (UTC)
Ok, I'm thinking about it...
I have no problem with gmail and have the best user experience with it, even in comparison with payed accounts which I ever had.
I didn't experience RAR-problem with Gmail because I never needed send RAR-attachments.
Anyway, I don't see how RAR-attachments denial can be a problem... Gmail notifies the sender that RAR-attachments are forbidden. ZIP-archive can be sent instead.
With my previous work email account I had problem to send pictures... that was real problem.

So, what else should I think about?
selfmade on July 22nd, 2005 09:12 pm (UTC)
Хотя, конечно, второй случай тоже не показатель. :)
