Conversation with americans
We live in cheap (but not the cheapest) neighborhood near Cincinnati University (5 minutes walking from the campus).
So I communicate with different group of people:
students (because of University), blacks and punks (because of neighborhood).
Yesterday I visited cafe bar. Punks like come here. I saw no blacks at the cafe bar. Only white punks. So I discovered that they hardly understand me (because of pronunciation). I used to conversation with white-collar people and students . They understand me well. But with punks sometimes I had to repeat simple sentence several times before they understand me. Probably such difference exists because students used to talk with different people, but punks used to talk mostly with other punks.

I have more simple idea to explain punk's hard understanding.
They may just sneer with you :)
Are you sure, that their behavior was serious? :))

Punks
I'm sure that they were interested in conversation with me.
They really had some problems with understanding my Russian pronunciation.
