Russian accent and serving picky customers
From my conversation with new customer:
----
[2 minutes of conversation skipped.]

Customer: Ok, your ad says that it would not hit my credit card for 30 days.

Dennis: Not sure. Where did you see this ad?

Customer: Yeah, that's what it said. I've read it 3 times.

Dennis: Ok, but where is that? Is it on our web site postjobfree.com?

Customer: Yeah, it's on the web site.

Dennis: What page is that? Is that Premium Membeship page?

Customer: Yes.

Dennis: Well, it says: "Do you have money-back guarantee?
Yes. If you are not satisfied for any reason, please let us know within 30 days since last payment and we will refund your last payment."
That's the only thing that ...

Customer: I can't understand you. Is there somebody else that I can talk to?

Dennis: Sorry, unfortunately not. But I can send you email if you want to.

Customer: You are the only person there?

Dennis: Yes, we are a small company. We are several people.
And they all talk like you?
Does anybody there speak clear English?

Dennis: You mean "without accent"? No.

Customer: Excuse me?

Dennis: No. Sorry: no.

Customer: Oh, my god, I made a mistake.

Dennis: Why do you think it is a mistake?

Customer: It's a mistake. You guys are too small and too foreign.
I'm gonna cancel it. Never mind.
Have a nice day. Thank you for your call.
----

P.S.: He did not cancel yet and even called me back later to complain that he cannot post multiple identical job descriptions.
This time he explained to me why opinion of job seekers who do not like duplicate job descriptions does not matter, because he, as a recruiter, is a paying customer, not job seekers.

I hope to keep him as a customer.

You need to hire a blond.
Clean and soberanspa on November 7th, 2015 03:27 am (UTC)
I vote for a brunette.
Dennis Gorelikdennisgorelik on November 7th, 2015 04:10 am (UTC)
Why brunette?
Clean and soberanspa on November 7th, 2015 04:48 am (UTC)
I believe in underdog.

+1 :)
Dennis Gorelikdennisgorelik on November 7th, 2015 04:10 am (UTC)
Do you mean soft-speaking blond who does not understand anything?
журнал закрытjuan_gandhi on November 7th, 2015 04:26 pm (UTC)
Yep.

Я говорю - Sorry, you got a wrong number. - На что тот достаточно противным голосом сказал - Yeah, I hear you, you are not Steve, you sound like an immigrant. Я вот все жду когда он перезвонит, чтоб сказать ему "and you sound like a piece of shit." ... =)

It is disturbing only at first.

Is your accent so thick indeed?
Or is it not?

Dennis Gorelikdennisgorelik on November 7th, 2015 04:03 am (UTC)
Re: Is your accent so thick indeed?
As a minimum, it is very noticeable.
But I believe - quite understandable. At least by people who recruit other people.

Re: Is your accent so thick indeed?
Do not underestimate that though. I have very heavy accent, and sometimes I do an effort to talk very clearly and eloquently (or, sometimes I have that in my mind, while the result is far from ideal). But I had several people who were working with me and for me, confessed after a year or two, that it took time for them to get used to the way I talk and understand most of the words. At the same time I know I am not the worst English speaker on the floor... =)

Re: Is your accent so thick indeed?
1) I try to speak clearly and eloquently.
And try to speak slower, especially if person on another end struggles to understand me.

But sometimes I do not know what to do in order to fix misunderstanding or xenophobia.

2) Sometimes, significant part of the problem is connection quality.
If person on another end is using mobile phone with weak channel - it makes it much more difficult to understand.

Sometimes my Skype may introduce connection problems too.

3) I know that Asians (Chinese, Indians, ...) have harder time than Russians communicating with grass root Americans.

Dennis Gorelikdennisgorelik on November 10th, 2015 02:48 pm (UTC)
serjiojitserserjiojitser on November 10th, 2015 03:55 pm (UTC)
