The state of the art in teleconferencing
---
http://www.alexstjohn.com/WP/2017/05/01/just-made-video-conferencing-work/
As long as Skype sucks, it’s pretty clear to everyone that Microsoft is in no danger of pioneering any revolutionary new UI paradigms when you have yet to master getting any of the old ones right yet.
.....
Basic video conferencing with a little audio and a dumb camera are barely functional in the year 2017 and the clowns responsible for it are getting wall-to-wall press coverage about the fairy-tale technology they are contriving to solve tiny irrelevant problems, INSTEAD of making their own multi-billion dollar telecommunications platform work reliably so that I can ACTUALLY stay in my own home instead of having to constantly spend thousands of dollars traveling on businesses.
.....
What if - you just made video conferencing so reliable that you put hotels, rental cars and the airlines completely out of business?
---

To be fair, telecommuting is getting better over time. Mostly because internet channels are getting faster and more reliable.
I do not need video, but I need a screen sharing.
Unfortunately Skype misbehaves when there are multiple people joining conference: screensharing may unexpectedly stop, participants may drop or simply do not hear each other...

We use Skype for business all the time, having non-stop meetings whole day long for people reside nearshore, everyting works as expected.

What does "reside nearshore" mean?

Are all participants actually on Skype or some are calling in from phone lines?

Do you use screen-sharing?

We are nearshore resources for people in the central office in the UK. Everybody is on Skype, using screen sharig all the time. (It's Skype for business actually.)

What's the difference between Skype for Business and Skype Classic?
Or is it the same product?

I'm confused by all these different versions of Skype.
Сисадмин-любитель: баракulrith on May 3rd, 2017 05:14 am (UTC)
Skype for business earlier was "Lync 2013".

Thanks. I found a good demo for Skype For Business:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_c4zVJ739M

It is definitely not the Skype I am currently using.

Is it correct that "Skype for Business" uses email address for signing in (which is not not the username that Skype classic uses)?

Does it mean that I from my Skype Classic cannot connect with your Skype for Business account?
Сисадмин-любитель: баракulrith on May 3rd, 2017 05:18 pm (UTC)
Yes, email and yes, can not connect to outside of the company
Dennis Gorelikdennisgorelik on May 4th, 2017 03:19 am (UTC)
> can not connect to outside of the company

Crap.

And you (meaning your organization) also had to setup your own Skype for Business server?
Сисадмин-любитель: баракulrith on May 4th, 2017 08:49 am (UTC)
Actually, I have no idea and not interesting. Probably we don't host a server...

This is for communication of many thousands of the company technical staff sitting in many countries and it works well. There are tons of conferences daily in every project, specialty track or other organizational unit. Four-five conferences daily is just usual thing.

But selling/management people may use something other if they need to have conference calls with clients. We don't need them because we shouldn't communicate with clients directly.

There is security question also - the company tries to cut any possible ways how an information can leave the company. For instance: any emails to outside of the company are tracked. Personal email is forbidden, etc

No direct communication
> We don't need them because we shouldn't communicate with clients directly.

What is the reason for that restriction?

Direct communication is usually the most efficient, right?

p.s. We have some onboarding conferencing with the client when the company employee came to the client office and use his own equipment to translate video for us. :)
Dennis Gorelikdennisgorelik on May 4th, 2017 08:58 am (UTC)
So instead of sending the whole team - you just send a technician who setup virtual conference?

When third person joins Skype conference, Skype automatically creates a conference group.
Is there a way to automatically exit conference group when third person disconnects from that group?
Сисадмин-любитель: баракulrith on May 3rd, 2017 05:14 am (UTC)
Have no idea, noticed no groups...
