Reddit CEO's feedback to fired employee
---
https://np.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/2iea97/i_am_a_former_reddit_employee_ama/cl1ygat?context=3
You were fired for the following reasons:
1) Incompetence and not getting much work done.
2) Inappropriate or irrelevant comments/questions when interviewing candidates
3) Making incorrect comments in public about reddit's systems that you had very little knowledge of, even after having these errors pointed out by your peers and manager.
4) Not taking feedback from your manager or other engineers about any of these when given to you, continuing to do #2 until we removed you from interviewing, and never improving at #1.

Ok, I don't get it. So everyone here says that CEO's statement was childish, and yet next time when another company issues a professional statement, people will be calling it content-less cover-your-ass PR fluff, and crying for more honesty and straight talk. Make up your mind.
As for me, personally, I think CEO's response was exactly what it should be. Honest, clear, straight to the point. Reddit just earned my respect as a workplace.

The CEO shouldn't have said anything at all. If he felt he really needed to, a simple "Yes, we terminated his employment, those are not the reasons, the reasons are not public" and leave it at that.

журнал закрытjuan_gandhi on October 9th, 2014 12:42 am (UTC)
Dennis Gorelikdennisgorelik on October 9th, 2014 01:15 am (UTC)

Yet another social network? No wonder I visited their website main page and could not see what is all about or what is so special about them. So many forum threads? How can they make money? That is the question...

When I first visited the web-site of the company I currently work for I almost immediately recognized what they do and significance of that.

The person who they fire should be grateful to them. :)

Interesting links from there, anyway...

Typical Reddit usage is that you regularly visit one of their subreddits (that is close to your interests).
Reading main Reddit is not a good experience.

I think Reddit makes money from occasional ads. I'm not sure though.

They make money from ads, premium features and gifts (you can gift somebody the premium features, if you really like what they wrote).

It's basically the largest forum on the internet. It's actually an awesome website, the quality of content on specialized subreddits is often very high. Check out http://www.reddit.com/r/askscience for example, or http://www.reddit.com/r/haskell , or even just funny stuff like http://www.reddit.com/r/retiredgif . (there's of course a lot of fucked up stuff too)

There's a ton of people there, upvotes/downvotes take care of the really rude/unstable people, and in most even very politically charged threads you can usually find different points of view represented in a reasonable way with good arguments (the best-argued position may be not the top-voted, but it will be findable), and without people throwing poop at each other too much. I can honestly say I learnt a lot just from reading good discussions on reddit.

Wow, and just because of the event that caused this thread I read all that and now going to visit reddit from time to time. Thanks!
Dennis Gorelikdennisgorelik on October 9th, 2014 04:12 am (UTC)
They say there is no bad advertisement.
